The Hope.MD Corporate Challenge:

"Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance."
-Robert F. Kennedy

Gentlemen,

Greetings from sunny Kadamiyah Baghdad! Over the past year we have been working to set up a 501(c)3 non-profit foundation here in Iraq. As you may know, large organizations such as the UN, Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders, and Unicef have been forced to flee the violence here. We built this foundation to help the humanitarian crisis we see every day. As far as we can tell there are no other options.

We would like to offer you a friendly challenge. Using our own funding we have helped nearly a dozen children receive surgery for life threatening and disabling conditions they suffered in violent attacks. According to the revenue and income metrics below, it appears to us that you have considerably greater resources to help more children. We would like to challenge you to match, dollar for dollar, any contributions we are able to raise from the internet community.

We have juxtaposed the quotes of your corporate responsibility statements in your annual reports with pictures of what we are experiencing here on the ground. This is not intended to appear sensational or to imply culpability; it is simply meant to draw attention to a crisis that has gone unreported and unrepaired for far too long.

We realize you have a massive fiduciary responsibility to a wide range of constituents, and we genuinely intend to fairly portray the complexity of the challenges you face in your management decisions. That being said, we hope you will help us live up to the ethical standards you embrace and accept this challenge. We take you at your word when you speak of ideals designed to improve the human condition. However, we recall being told that all it takes for evil to flourish is for good men to do nothing. Which begs the question: what will you do?

Sincerely,
The Hope.MD Foundation
